Allergy FAQs

When Should You See a Vet for a Pet Allergy?

We all love our pets and want to keep them as healthy as possible. However, there are some things that just seem unavoidable when it comes to our pets and one of those is pet allergies. At Acres Mill Veterinary Clinic in Canton, we can provide quality treatment if your pet is suffering from allergies. Below is a bit more information and some frequently asked questions regarding pet allergies.

What are the Symptoms of Allergies in Pets?

Many of the allergy symptoms that are often seen in pets are similar to those that humans experience. The following are some of the symptoms your pet may have if they have allergies:

  • Itchy Skin and Itchy Runny Eyes
  • Sneezing and Coughing
  • Vomiting or Diarrhea
  • Snoring and Inflamed Throat

What are the Causes of Allergies?

Allergies are often a result of sensitivity to ordinary substances. Animals may specifically suffer from food allergies, skin allergies, and different types of environmental allergies. To get to the root cause of the allergy it may be necessary to keep a log of all the foods your pet has recently eaten or products, such as shampoo, that you've used.

How Serious is an Allergy and Should You See a Vet?

Most allergies that pets experience are bothersome, but usually not life-threatening. Some types, however, can be extreme and potentially dangerous for your pet. An acute allergic reaction can cause anaphylactic shock if the reaction is severe enough. Unfortunately, this can be fatal if left untreated. These types of severe reactions may occur if an animal has a strong reaction to a vaccine or is allergic to a bee sting.

Can Allergies be Avoided?

Good grooming and regular bathing is a good way to prevent many types of skin allergies. To prevent food allergies, make sure your pet only eats food that is part of their regular diet. To help prevent environmental allergies you'll want to ask your vet about what type of flea prevention products are safe to use. Even though anaphylactic reactions are considered rare, it's always recommended to keep a close watch on your pet after they've received a new vaccine, have been stung by an insect, or even if they are trying new food.
